Once upon a time (near the end of the Internet Bubble), telecommunications equipment stocks were the bee's knees -- the most popular kids on the block. Today, however, many of these firms are just pale reflections of their former selves. One of yesteryear's favorites, for example, JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU ) , once boasted a per-share price (split-adjusted) in excess of $1,050. Today, it costs a mere $13.28 -- down 98.75% from its peak.
And it's still not a buy. Here's why, in three short points:
JDS Uniphase stock is losing ground
When you stack up JDS Uniphase stock up against two of its rivals-- Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO ) and Finisar (NASDAQ: FNSR ) , some interesting dynamics become apparent. First and foremost, of the three, JDS Uniphase stock is the only one that has no P/E ratio ... because it has no "E" -- earnings -- to weigh its "P" -- price -- against.
Sure, Finisar is no bargain, either, at a price-to-earnings ratio of 170. But at least it has a positive P/E. Of the three, only Cisco has anything approaching an attractive number to its name: a P/E of 11.7.

Adrian Day: Yes, yes, I like the concept of looking up the secondary plays. I mean, you know we own Altius (ALS) for example, rather than Alderon (ADV). Altius owns 30% of Alderon, that is more diversified, has a better balance sheet. If Alderon succeeds, Atius will succeed.

We re-established an investment in CME Group, Inc. (CME) during the period. CME is the largest and most diversified derivatives marketplace in the U.S. Its exchanges support trading across a variety of asset classes, including interest rates, equity indexes, energy, agricultural commodities, foreign exchange and metals. We believe CME has the opportunity to significantly accelerate its growth rates due to the eventual normalization of interest rates and the attendant interest rate volatility. CME's interest rate trading volumes (ADV) have been depressed as a result of the Fed's zero interest rate policy and low interest rate volatility. For example, interest rate ADV was 4.8 million in 2012compared to 7.1 million in 2007, before the financial crisis. However, given the Fed's recent policy statements (discussed above), market participants are starting to anticipate an end to quantitative easing (QE). On May 30, CME experienced record volume for interest rate derivatives with ADV of 19.4 million. With the globalization of CME's business, a host of new products, and the regulatory requirement for interest rate swaps to be cleared on an exchange, we believe CME's interest rate volumes can surpass their prior peak, significantly driving earnings growth for the company.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By John Divine]
Another victim of a weak earnings call, shares of security company ADT (NYSE: ADT ) lost 6.9% after posting profits that rose just 2%. Despite adding more than 300,000 new customers, revenue failed to meet expectations, coming in at $821 million -- analysts were calling for about $824 million. While today's slide was extreme, the company isn't exactly in major trouble. It just seems to be in a phase of slow, steady growth.

David Paul Morris/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesMicrosoft has named Satya Nadella, executive vice president of its cloud and enterprise group, as its new CEO. SEATTLE -- Microsoft named 22-year company veteran Satya Nadella as its next chief executive officer Tuesday and said co-founder Bill Gates would step down as chairman and advise the new CEO on technology, marking an epochal change of control at the company that drove the PC revolution. Nadella, a 46-year old born in India who led the creation of Microsoft's (MSFT) Internet-based, or "cloud" computing services, is only Microsoft's third CEO in 39 years, taking over from Steve Ballmer, who inherited the job from Gates in 2000. The move ends a five-month search process at the Redmond, Wash.-based company, triggered by the August announcement of Ballmer's decision to retire. That was longer than many investors had expected. "It's a relief this process is over," said Daniel Ives, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets. "Many investors view it as the 'safe pick' as Mr. Nadella is a born-and-bred Redmond insider. But the uphill battle continues for Microsoft on its path to growth." Microsoft's new chairman John Thompson, who led the search for a CEO, said the process went as planned. "We aimed to complete the process within four to six months, and we met that goal," Thompson said in a video statement on Microsoft's website. "After reviewing all of the candidates, Satya was our first and unanimous choice." Gates said Nadella's experience in cloud computing made him the right man to lead Microsoft, as the company struggles to find its feet in the new arena of mobile computing. "Satya's got the right background to lead the company during this era," said Gates. "There's a challenge in mobile computing. There's an opportunity in the cloud." Thompson didn't mention other candidates, although sources close to the company have told Reuters that at one time Ford Motor (F) CEO Alan Mulally was a leading contender. PC

As smartphone prices are dropping, it's harder for larger companies to keep up with smaller vendors in emerging markets, which can put out phones with decent specifications for lower prices.
