Vimicro International

Vimicro International (VIMC), together with its subsidiaries, engages in the design, development and marketing of mixed-signal semiconductor products and system-level solutions for the consumer electronics, communications and surveillance markets in Mainland China and Hong Kong. This stock closed up 2.4% to $2.88 in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $2.81-$2.90

52-Week Range: $1.10-$3.90

Tuesday's Volume: 108,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 90,666

From a technical perspective, VIMC spiked higher here right off some near-term support at $2.80 with above-average volume. This stock recently formed a bottoming chart pattern right above $2.60. Shares of VIMC are now trending higher off that bottom and it's breaking out above some near-term overhead resistance at $2.94. Market players should now look for a continuation move higher in the short-term if VIMC manage to take out Tuesday's high of $3.02 to some more resistance at $3.06 with strong volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in VIMC as long as it's trending above $2.80 or above $2.70 and then once it sustains a move or close above $3.02 to $3.06 with volume that hits near or above 90,666 shares. If we get that move soon, then VIMC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $3.40 to $3.60. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put its 52-week high at $3.90 into range for shares of VIMC.

Abraxas Petroleum

Abraxas Petroleum (AXAS), an independent energy company, engages in the acquisition, exploitation, development and production of oil and gas in the U.S. and Canada. This stock closed up 5.6% to $3.35 in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $3.18-$3.35

52-Week Range: $1.93-$3.96

Tuesday's Volume: 1.44 million

Three-Month Average Volume: 1.19 million

From a technical perspective, AXAS ripped sharply higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $3.27 with above-average volume. This move also pushed shares of AXAS into breakout territory, after the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.31 to $3.32. Market players should now look for a continuation move higher in the short-term if AXAS manages to take out Tuesday's high of $3.35 with strong volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in AXAS as long as it's trending above Tuesday's low of $3.18 or above more support at $3.10 and then once it sustains a move or close above $3.35 with volume that hits near or above 1.19 million shares. If we get that move soon, then AXAS will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels $3.57 to its 52-week high at $3.96. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give AXAS a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance level at $4.39.

ERBA Diagnostics

ERBA Diagnostics (ERB), through its subsidiaries, develops, manufactures and markets diagnostic test kits or assays, and automated systems that are used to aid in the detection of disease markers in the areas of autoimmune, infectious diseases, clinical chemistry, hematology, and diabetes testing. This stock closed up 10% to $3.08 in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $2.82-$3.18

52-Week Range: $0.62-$4.13

Tuesday's Volume: 62,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 214,318

From a technical perspective, ERB bounced sharply higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $2.76 with lighter-than-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of ERB within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if ERB manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.18 to $3.39 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ERB as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $2.76 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 214,318 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ERB will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance level at its 52-week high of $4.13. Any high-volume move above $4.13 will then give ERB a chance to tag $4.50 to $5.

Are weak retail sales a warning sign for economy?

If you've been busy shoveling snow and haven't heard yet, retail sales fell 0.4% in January, a weak reading considering Wall Street was expecting sales to be unchanged from the previous month.

Nasty weather has played a big role in the dearth of spending, even though shopping is an All-American pursuit that ranks right up there with watching a ballgame or sipping a cocktail.

Americans are more hunkered down in survival mode than they are a live-and-let-live mentality. "You can't focus on your normal life. We are not being consumers," says Liz Ann Sonders, chief investment strategist at Charles Schwab. "To question the notion that retail sales were affected by weather means people are not looking out the window."

SLOWDOWN?: Winter storms threaten to chill economy

Whether stormy weather is a valid excuse to explain why shoppers aren't shopping, slowing sales at the nation's malls, restaurants and online retailers, are having a negative impact on the economy.

In fact, it is one of the main reasons why economists are dialing back their growth expectations.

Thursday, Barclays cut its final fourth-quarter GDP estimate to 2.3% from 2.6%, which is below the government's 3.2% estimate from Jan. 30.

Capital Economics says first-quarter growth could come in between 2% and 2.5%, well below the 3% growth Wall Street is hoping for in 2014.

The good news? "Haircuts to GDP" have not yet caused corporate profit estimates to suffer similar-size trims, says Sonders. But it's something to keep an eye on.

Top Machinery Companies To Own For 2014

On April 8th, we learned that General Electric (GE) would be acquiring Lufkin Industries (LUFK). The deal is one of the three largest in the oilfield machinery and equipment industry during the past decade, and sets the stage for further acquisitions in this sector. Investors should start considering which companies might be next.

Bloomberg had been saying since September 2012 that LUFK was a takeover target when its stock had fallen to the lowest price in 3 years. "Lufkin will more than double GE's share of the artificial lift segment and give it about 15 percent market share," Julian Mitchell, an analyst at Credit Suisse in New York wrote in a note to clients.

Companies like GE have access to billions of dollars at low-to-zero interest rate cost-of-borrowing. The LUFK deal is only one of the energy-related purchases that it has been making, and it won't be the last. That's why I've written this article, so we investors can begin looking for the next likely takeover targets of companies like GE and Exxon Mobil (XOM).

    Diesel and natural gas engine maker Cummins (NYSE: CMI  ) turned in a strong gain of 1.7% despite no company-specific news. In this case, I'd postulate that today's move related to the bullish Chicago PMI data, which would suggest that manufacturing activity is picking up, and that the need for newer, more fuel-efficient engines to power trucking fleets will soon follow. Cummins was certainly sitting prettier when natural gas prices were in the $2/mbtu range, but even now looks like a fantastic value, with natural gas prices topping $4/mbtu, given the high prices of traditional gasoline, and the need for trucking companies to save over the long term by investing now in fuel-efficient engines.

We believe that investors have bid Weyerhaeuser's stock up by 75% over the last six quarters because they are counting on a recovery in the housing market to serve as a catalyst for growth in WY's top and bottom lines. We can see that it would provide significant leverage to WY's bottom line because 53% of WY's operating income was used to pay debt interest, so any boost to revenue would boost WY's operating income and enable WY to generate significant gains in Net Income. We increased our fair intrinsic value per share for Weyerhaeuser from $29.02 in October to $34.88 in March and we're raising it again to $35.92.     Over the weekend Brookfield Asset Management (NYSE: BAM  ) announced that it and its affiliate Brookfield Infrastructure Partners (NYSE: BIP  ) are selling the Longview Timber business to Weyerhaeuser (NYSE: WY  ) for $2.65 billion. The deal consisted of 645,000 acres of high-quality timberlands in the Pacific Northwest. While these timber assets are located in the U.S., as you will see this deal is all about China.

Samsung sells 110-inch ultra-HD TV for $150,000

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Samsung said a 110-inch TV that has four times the resolution of standard high-definition TVs is going on sale for about $150,000 in South Korea.

The launch Monday of the giant television set reflects global TV makers' move toward ultra HD TVs, as manufacturing bigger TVs using OLED proves too costly.

Last year, Samsung and rival LG Electronics, the world's top two TV makers, touted OLED as the future of TV. OLED screens are ultrathin and can display images with enhanced clarity and deeper color saturation.

But Samsung and LG failed to make OLED TVs a mainstream that would replace the LCD television sets and still struggling to mass produce larger and affordable TVs with OLED. Meanwhile, Japanese media reported last week that Sony Corp. and Panasonic Corp. decided to end their OLED partnership.

Demand for U-HD TVs is expected to rise despite dearth of content while its price will likely come down faster than that of the OLED TVs. Much of the growth is forecast to come from China, a major market for the South Korean TV makers. Chinese TV makers have been making a push into the U-HD TV market as well.

According to NPD DisplaySearch, global sales of ultra-HD TV sets will surge from 1.3 million this year to 23 million in 2017. More than half of the shipments will be taken by Chinese companies between 2013 and 2017, according to NPD.

While Chinese TV makers have been seeking to boost sales of U-HD TVs with a lower price and a smaller size, Samsung's strategy is to go bigger with a higher price tag. Samsung's 110-inch U-HD TV measures 2.6 meters by 1.8 meters. It will be available in China, the Middle East and Europe. In South Korea, the TV is priced at 160 million won ($152,000) while prices in other countries vary.

Samsung said it received 10 orders for the latest premium TVs from the Middle East. Previously, the largest U-HD TV made by Samsung was 85-inch measured diagonally.

The ultra-HD TVs are also known as "4K" because they cont! ain four times more pixels than an HD TV.
