10 Best High Dividend Stocks To Buy For 2014

In 2013, precious- and industrial-metal miners were good for one thing: Mining losses. Will 2014 be any better?

Reuters

Last year, Barrick Gold (ABX) lost 48%, Newmont Mining (NEM) fell 48%, Goldcorp (GG) declined 39%. Iron miner Cliff’s Natural Resources (CLF), meanwhile, finished the year down 30%, while Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) gained 17%.

Deutsche Bank’s Jorge Beristain and team explain what happened and what has to change for a better 2014:

2013 was a third straight year when NA Metals & Mining equities significantly underperformed both the underlying metals basket (by 33 percentage points) and S&P500 (by 65 percentage points). The decline in metals prices has brought to the fore impact of prior administration missteps. New management teams are now in “clean-up” mode, seeking to lower operating costs and slash capital spending which, for most, has reduced the risk of further equity issuance. However, to finally outperform the market in 2014, stocks have to offer more than absence of dilution/going concern risk, namely a focus back on per share growth or sustainably high dividend yield.

Senior Housing Properties Trust (NYSE: SNH) has been an incredible dividend story. For years, it has sentsolid dividends to its shareholders. That dividend yield is now up to a whopping 7.2% or so. The problem is that the stock just hit a 52-week low again on Friday, and the stock is now not that far at all from being at a 2-year low of close to $20.00.

  • [By Anna Prior]

Senior Housing Properties Trust sa(SNH)id it plans to offer 12 million shares, and expects to use the proceeds to repay amounts outstanding on its revolving credit facility and for general corporate purposes. Senior Housing Properties Trust recently had 188.2 million shares outstanding, according to FactSet. Shares fell 4.8% to $21.68 premarket.

Because of the requirement to pay out the vast majority of their income, REITs often have extremely high dividend payouts. Mortgage REITs ARMOUR Residential (NYSE: ARR  ) and Chimera Investment (NYSE: CIM  ) use leveraged strategies to produce yields well in excess of 10%, while Omega Healthcare (NYSE: OHI  ) and Senior Housing Properties Trust (NYSE: SNH  ) , which specialize in long-term care facilities and other properties catering to older residents, both have yields between 5% and 6%.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Finally, you need to consider going where services you want are offered. For instance, health-care real-estate investment trusts Senior Housing Properties (NYSE: SNH  ) , LTC Properties (NYSE: LTC  ) , and Health Care REIT (NYSE: HCN  ) , which recently acquired Sunrise Senior Living, all offer facilities in various places across the nation to provide for retirees who need health-care assistance in their living arrangements. But if your particular medical needs require specialists that are concentrated in particular cities, it's far more important for your health to be close to those specialists -- even if it means paying more in taxes.

Lindsay Corp.(LNN) said fiscal second-quarter revenue and earnings fell as the company’s irrigation business remains mired in a sales slump. The company’s results underperformed Wall Street expectations.

Historically the stock prices of Deere (DE) and other agricultural equipment firms and retailers like Case-New Holland (CNH), Titan Machinery (TITN), AGCO (AGCO), Tractor Supply (TSCO), Valmont (VAL), and Lindsay (LNN) have tended to closely track the price of corn. When corn prices go up, farmers tend to make more money, and they spend that money on new equipment from Deere and other firms. This relationship is especially strong for Deere and Corn, but it holds true for all of the stocks above to some extent. (Correlation coefficients between all of the stock prices above and corn are statistically significant to at least the 5% level, see my blog here for more details.)
